The project is being led by some big names, and has plans to compete in multiple categories from F4 and the way to F2.
Formula 1 world champion, Lando Norris, has co-founded a new racing team, LN4 Fusion.
The team has already confirmed it’s participating in multiple single seater championships on the road to F1, beginning next year. These include:
- Italian F4
- Formula Regional European Championship
- FIA Formula 3
They also have plans to race in British F4 and FIA Formula 2 in the near future.
They’re entry into F2 and F3 is particularly interesting, as they have “required selected assets of AIX Racing”. In other words, they will be taking over the team in F3 and F2, if their application to race in that championship is confirmed.
Who’s involved?
It’s not just the scale of the project that shows their ambition. They also have some big names in the team.
Their biggest asset is obviously Lando Norris. The F1 world champion knows what it’s like trying to reach F1, but more importantly, will be bringing in a host of sponsors which should help keep the team afloat finacially.
The role of team principal will be taken up by the vastly experienced Rene Rosin. The Italian, who was previously in charge of Prema, has overseen success at almost every level of single seater racing, giving LN4 Fusion a greatly experienced leader.
Dan Hazelwood will oversee the teams UK operations alongside his current role in charge of Fusion motorsport, a UK based karting team.
Other notable staff include Racing Director Guillaume Capietto, and CEO Dan Richards.
F2 and F3 CEO, Bruno Michel, said: “Lando has been the first Formula 1 World Champion coming from Formula 2, and to have him involved in one of our teams is extremely positive.
I am certain that this will be a serious project and they will bring a lot of expertise to our Championship.
I’m also glad to see René Rosin back in our paddock with this new challenge.”
A Path to Success?
This all sounds good, but setting up a team is one thing, being competative is another.
Yes, they are technically competing in spec series, where all the cars are equal. However, being competitive straight out the gate won’t be easy.
This is especially true for F2 and F3, where they will be taking over from AIX, the team which currently sits last in the standings in both championships.
We saw exactly how difficult this can be with the Dams team, and their entry into F3 last year. Despite being decently competitive in F2, they have made a slow start to life in F3. They finished 10th and last in their first season, and currently sit ninth in this years standings, just ahead of AIX.
However, as previously mentioned, LN4 Fusion haas a wealth of experience amongst their staff, which should hopefully make this daunting task a little easier.
Furthermore, the sponsors brought in by Norris, such as Monster energy and Tumi, should provide some financial stability, and reduce their need for pay drivers.
At the launch event in Italy last night, Norris also announced the LN4 Legacy Proggrame.
This is a driver development programme led and funded by Norris himself.
Like his fellow world champions, Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, Norris’ driver development programme aims to identify and develop young talent.
“Motorsport doesn’t have a shortage of talent. It has a shortage of opportunity”, said Norris.
“I know that getting to Formula 1 takes so much more than just talent. You need the right people around you, the right support and the right opportunities at the right time.
“That’s what these two projects are all about. LN4 Fusion is about building a race team that can compete with the best in junior motorsport, with great people and a great environment for drivers to develop.
“The LN4 Legacy Programme is about helping talented young drivers get opportunities they might not otherwise have. For me, they naturally fit together.
“I want to help create opportunities for the next generation, both on and off the track, and hopefully make a real difference to young drivers coming through the sport.
