Pepe Merti wins F2 sprint race after scary crash for Meguetounif

The Spanish driver won the race from fifth on the grid, as the halo prevented what could have been a very serious injury for Luke Browning.

Richard Verschoor now finds himself just one point behind championship leader Alex Dunne.

Race Report

John Bennet was the driver on pole for the 28-lap race around the Redbull ring, with Joshua Duerksen alongside him on the front row.

A poor start from the British driver saw him drop down to fifth, as Duerksen led from Marti who was now up into second having started in fifth place as a result of a three place grid penalty for impeding another car in qualifying.

On lap two Sami Meguetounif attempted to pass Arvid Lindblad down the inside of turn three, unaware that Lindblad was himself trying to pass Luke Browning.

The resulting crash saw Meguetounif launched over the top of both cars, with the roll-hoop of the Trident very nearly hitting Luke Browning who was well protected by the halo.

After a red flag delay, the race would resume with a rolling start before Dino Beganovic was spun round by Oliver Goethe just one lap later requiring a safety car.

It was at this point that race control issued a five-second penalty to Alex Dunne for jump start.

Duerksen continued to lead Marti as the safety car came in, whilst Dunne continued to struggle, being passed by Sebastian Montoya and Victor Martins on the same lap.

By lap 17 Marti had closed right up to the back of the race leader and managed to get passed at turn four, but Duerksen came straight back at him through the fast left-hander of turn six to retake the lead as their battle continued for another lap.

This time Marti went for a lunge at the top of the hill at turn three, pushing Duerksen right to the edge of the track which left him no room for reply, and almost saw him get overtaken by third place driver Roman Stanek.

The driver behind him, Amaury Cordeel, looked to be on for a decent result in fourth before he spun round on the final lap of the race. With the drivers struggling for breaking performance and Cordeel stranded in the middle of the track, the Belgian driver was inevitably hit which caused another multi-car collision which took himself, Gabriele Mini, Leonardo Fornaroli and John Bennet out of the race.

Whilst all that was happening, Pepe Marti crossed the line to win by three seconds in the end, with Duerksen and Stanek completing the podium.

Despite all the incidents in todays race, every driver managed to walk away unharmed, which goes to show once again how far the safety standards have gone in this sport.

Meanwhile in the drivers championship Dunne’s lead has been reduced to just one single point over Richard Verschoor who finished fourth, and would have been leading the standings had it not been for the incident on the last lap which promoted the Irishman up to sixth.

A win for Campos today see’s them extend their lead over Hitech at the top of the teams championship.
