The first feature race of this years Formula 2 championship has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

The race was scheduled to start at 11:30 local time, but had to be abandoned due to the heavy rain around the Albert Park circuit.

Victor Martins was due to start on pole for the event.

After delaying the start, the cars did eventually hit the track behind the safety car, however it quickly became apparent that the conditions just weren’t suitable for racing.

Because the drivers couldn’t complete any racing laps, no points are awarded for this race.

Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel said: “I feel sorry for the fans who wanted to see us race and also for our teams and drivers who came all the way to Melbourne, but safety takes precedence.”

“We tried everything we could to make it happen, but ultimately, the track conditions were too dangerous, which the drivers confirmed over the radio, so the right call was to cancel. We focus now on Bahrain, which will take place on 11-13 of April. We tried everything we could to make it happen, but ultimately, the track conditions were too dangerous, which the drivers confirmed over the radio, so the right call was to cancel.
