Former F1 driver Logan Sargeant will make his IndyCar debut later this year during a test with Meyer Shank Racing.

This comes after the American was dropped from Formula 1 mid-season after a string of poor performances.

Sargeant joined F1 with Williams in 2023 after an impressive F2 season where he took two wins and finished fourth in the standings as the top rookie.

His time in F1 was less successful however, scoring just one point in his first season and was noticeably off the pace of teammate Alex Albon.

But it wasn’t just his lack off pace that was the problem, he also had a habit of crashing, and quite dramatic crashes at that which cost the team millions of dollars in repairs.

Eventually enough was enough for team boss James Vowels who after another big crash at the Dutch Grand Prix earlier this year decided to sack Sargeant mid-season, replacing him with F2 driver Franco Colapinto.

Ever since then there has been lots of speculation around him returning to the states to race in IndyCar, and it looks like those rumours may finally be coming true, as Meyer Shank racing confirmed yesterday that Sargeant will test with the team at the Thermal Club in November.

Hopefully for him, this test will provide an opportunity for a full-time race seat in IndyCar next year, however it might not be with Meyer Shank, as they already have two cars charted for next season, meaning that three’s no guarantee he’ll make it to the grid even if they run a third car for him.

Other News

In other IndyCar related news, it was announced last week that Callum Ilott would be joining Prema’s new IndyCar team next year. After finishing second in F2 to Mick Schumacher in 2020, Ilott has raced sporadically in IndyCar as well as WEC, with his most recent outing coming during this years Indy500 where he finished 11th for McLaren.

Ilott has already race with Prema in F3 back in 2017 and with the talent that he’s already shown, this looks like a great signing for IndyCar’s newest team, with Ilott calling it a “amazing chance”. Adding that “It’s going to be something special to build off, a lot of hard work but I’m excited to join the team and see what we can do together.”
