F2 drivers to look out for this year

The 2024 Formula 2 driver line up, is shaping up to be one of the most talented line up of drivers we’ve seen in years. With experienced drivers returning from last year, along with new drivers from various backgrounds. We’ve chosen 5 drivers that we think could be title challengers this year and potentially even bag themselves and F1 seat for 2025.

Oliver Bearman

Bearman made a pretty good impression during his first F2 season last year, taking 4 wins and finishing 6th overall as the 2nd highest rookie. While he lacked consistency, on his day he was easily the quickest driver on the grid and this was on full display at Baku where he took pole position, won the sprint race and then the feature race, putting together the most dominant weekend of the season at just 17 years old! He won 2 further races last year in both Barcelona and Monza which were both feature races.

He’s surely a favourite for the title this year as he will once again be driving with Prema and would’ve gained a lot of confidence after his FP1 outings with Haas last year.

Victor Martins

The Frenchman had a very successful start to his Formula 2 career last year, taking 9 podiums and just a single win on his way to fifth in the standings as the highest place rookie. While he hasn’t officially signed a contract for next year, it’s pretty much confirmed that he will be driving with ART next year, the team that took fellow Frenchman Theo Pourchaire to the F2 tile last year.

There’s every chance that Victor could win the F2 title in his second season this year, similar to how he won the F3 championship in 2022 after a similarly impressive first season the year before.

Gabriel Bortoleto

Bortoleto won the F3 championship last year by a pretty convincing 45 points, and while he only won 2 races it was his unparalleled consistency that won him the title, as he only finished outside the top 10 on three occasions and took 4 P2s over the course of the 18 race championship. This was all during his first season meaning that he was up against more experienced drivers but managed to beat them all!

He will be racing with Virtuosi next year for his first F2 season and when you consider that F2 will be using different cars to last year, it seems reasonable to think that he will be in the title fight, coming in as a dominant F3 champion.

Ritomo Miyata

Recently, we’ve seen F2 drivers moving onto other series such as Japan’s Super Formula, with the most recent example being last years champion Theo Pourchaire. However we rarely see drivers from Super Formula moving to F2 which is why Ritomo Miyata is so interesting. In terms of his performance, he won the Super Formula championship last year, beating Alpha Tauri’s reserve driver Liam Lawson to the title.

This year he will be racing with the Rodin Carlin team in F2, which is the same team that fellow Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda drove for before his move to F1. The team would’ve learned a lot from Tsunoda and will hopefully get the best out of Miyata as he races in Europe for the first time.

Kimi Antionelli

No other driver in F2 has anywhere near as much hype around them as Kimi Antionelli, and with good reason. Kimi has been dominating the juniors formulas recently, notching up titles in Italian F4, German F4, Formula regional middle eastern and formula regional European championships, all in his first season. But he didn’t just win these championships, he dominated them, similar to how Max Verstappen dominated during his journey to F1.

At the age 17, Kimi will be skipping F3 and going straight into F2 with Prema, for what will be his toughest challenge yet. But with F2 using new cars for this season, it will level the playing field which could give Kimi the chance to fight for the title against the more experienced drivers.

With the new car, talented drivers and a new track in Qatar, the 2024 Formula 2 season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive and entertaining seasons in the sports history.
